Choosing the Right Major for You

When I came into school, I was a biological sciences major, hoping to pursue a medical degree.  In my three years at Northwestern University, I took the scenic route to my current film major.  Along the way, I considered engineering, economics, psychology, and English.

The advantage of a liberal arts education is that you have the ability to test drive any degree you want.  Interested in Economics? Take an Introduction to Macroeconomics course!  Law?  Take Introduction to International Relations!  You might feel pressured into choosing a major and sticking with it, but don’t be afraid to explore.

If you found what you love on the first try, by all means stick with it, but you should never feel forced into a box.  Most people change majors at least once in their college career.  Even transferring between schools and departments is much simpler task than it can first appear as universities want to find the right path for you.

For all of my indecisiveness, I am not going to have to stay at school more than four years and I have even had time for a minor.  Don’t be afraid to explore your options and don’t stress over what you write down in your applications because it can, and most likely will, change.
