An Essay On Picking Up Trash Gets Me Into UPenn

The story we share today is very short but it radiates great insights. The author, who’s a UPenn alumni, says he has formed and maintained the habit of picking up trash for a decade. Wherever and whenever he sees trash, he’ll pick it up and throw into the trash bin.

This habit was mentioned in his application essay to the University of Pennsylvania, and it got him into UPenn. A tiny detail as it is, the habit sheds light on something bigger, which, according to the author, is that “this habit endowed me with the courage and mental toughness to bend down in the public, do the dirty job from day to day, and never give up what I believe is right regardless of the way people look at me.”

Perhaps for readers like you and me, the biggest take-away from the story is that we ought to believe in ourselves and develop strong personalities. Just as the author suggests, “When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.”
