BYU, Marketing, and My Journey

Studying Marketing at Brigham Young University (BYU) was not my plan three years ago. My dream was to get into the Ho Chi Minh University of Social Sciences and Humanities, pursue a degree in journalism and then start my career as a reporter. However, my life has changed since my brother went to the National University of Singapore for his Bachelor degree. From his example, I found the strong inspiration to study abroad and to challenge myself with new adventures around the world.

My journey to America began. During my research, BYU appeared to have a great program in journalism – The Universe ran by BYU has always been among the best college newspapers in the country. I decided to nail BYU as one of my top university choices and got accepted after four months of preparation.

I got the chance to visit the news and broadcasting room my first day coming to BYU. I was overwhelmed by the modern and intense working environment. However, the moment that changed my plan during that visit was when I got into the advertising lab. Creativity and fun filled in the air. With my passion in business and being creative, I finally landed my major as Marketing in which I can better develop and connect my new ideas with other people as well as challenge myself to keep updated with the world every day.

It has been three years since I began my journey in the States. I feel homesick sometimes, but never regret my decision. I have made great friends and connections at BYU. Although I still miss the busy lifestyle in Ho Chi Minh City, the peaceful environment and friendly people in Provo – a college town – are definitely worth my 16-hour flight.

I am grateful that I was brave enough to put myself into this challenging but inspiring journey. I cannot wait to see what will happen in my next step to the future.
